9. Pot Can't Call The Kettle Black.....

After a long and artistically triumphant association with Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff that lasted from 1969's The O'Jays in Philadelphia to 1987's Let Me Love You, the O'Jays broke their ties to the legendary Philly producers/songwriters, left Philadelphia International Records and opted for a more high-tech "urban contemporary" approach with Serious. Obviously well aware of what younger R&B units like Guy, Levert (lead singer Eddie Levert's young sons and relatives) and Today were up to, the veteran soulsters incorporated "new jack swing" and hip-hop elements and made it clear they were intent on changing with the times. But thankfully, the gritty, gospel-influenced belting that made the O'Jays so dynamic to begin with remained. Though Serious (whose producers include members of the O'Jays and Levert, Terry Stubbs and Dennis Lambert) isn't in a class with gems like Back Stabbers or Family Reunion, there's a lot to admire here - including the vulnerable "Out of My Mind," the silky "Never Been Better" and the earthy ballad "Serious Hold on Me." The engaging "Pot Can't Call the Kettle Black" speaks volumes about the O'Jays' outlook - urging fellow baby boomers who criticize their kids' hip-hop to let them be themselves and remember when they were young

Tracks
The marketing minds at All Platinum/Stang Records released an album with tracks by the O'Jays and the Moments and dubbed it: TheO'Jays Meet the Moments. The Moments recorded for the label in question, theO'Jays did not. Some of the O'Jays sideswere cut in Cleveland for Saru Records, and a couple were produced by George Kerr. This was pre - "Backstabbers," when the O'Jays were a quartet comprising Eddie LeVert, Walter Williams, William Powell and Bobby Massey. The Moments were Al Goodman, Billy Brown and Harry Ray. "Peace" by the O'Jays proved that they recorded social significant songs before Gamble And Huff; William Powell introduces the song in a chilly falsetto and Eddie LeVert takes it home exhorting about the world's woes. "Baby You Move Me" provides a good vehicle for LeVert to display his vocal prowess. "Don't You Know a True Love" has the O'Jays doing some unusual backing fills to Eddie's lead. Walter Williams fronts the remaining two O'Jays selections in his resonant baritone; both are midtempo lilting numbers

14. I Miss You

The album cover deceptively depicts five O'Jays when actually only four members - Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, William Powell and Bobby Massey - sing on these tracks; Bill Isle, the fifth member, quit in the late'60s, and the cover was shot in the mid-'60s, when the group recorded for Imperial Records. George Kerr produced most of these tracks, with some productions from the Poindexter brothers; the recordings were originally released on Bell Records. "I'll Be Sweeter Tomorrow," a gorgeous ballad, became their highest chart entry to date. The follow-up, "Look Over Your Shoulder," nearly duplicated its predecessor's success; both were indicators of good things to come. The B-sides of the aforementioned, "I DigYour Act" and "I'm So Glad I Found You," were both quality uptempo grooves, and all four sides were led by Eddie Levert. Walter Williams handled the lead on their third 45 for Bell Records,"The Choice," an energetic message about finding yourself. It did poorly, and its flip, "Going, Going, Gone,"had more in common with the first two releases but was not nearly as compelling. The fourth single, "I Miss You," didn't receive much play, even in the Cantonian's adopted hometown of Cleveland. The slow, meandering ballad just didn't have enough of the right stuff. The flip,"Now That I Found You," featured Levert and Williams alternating leads on the same song for the first time. Two more singles were released by Bell: "Don't You Know a True Love When You See It," which was a drastic change in their style, and "Four for the Price of One," released in 1973 to capitalize on their success at Philadelphia International Records. Bell slapped "Look Over YourShoulder" onto the flip of the remake of Larry Williams and Johnny"Guitar" Watson's "Two forthe Price of One." Walter Williams' best lead, "Just Another Guy," tenderly sung in his mercurial baritone, never appeared on a 45.
